Chiltepin is a very hot wild variety from the region of Mexico and southern North America. This wild variety produces hundreds of small, very hot berries on perennial bushes. Authors claim that Chiltepin could be the origin of all chili species. In Mexico, the heat of the Chiltepin is also referred to as “arrebatado” (= Spanish: uncontrolled, stormy) because it develops rapidly and intensely, but is not permanent.
